My suggestion: The same way as single/multi-selection works with files in
Windows or Gnome:

Left click -> select one image
<ctrl>-Left click -> add more images to selection
<shift>-Left click -> select range
<ctrl>-a -> select all

But ... I have no idea how much trouble this creates to implement.
